Alphonse bought two bicycles. He sold one to Bettany for 300 pounds making a loss of 25%, and one to Gemma also for 300 pounds making a profit of 25%. Overall, did he break even? If not, did he make a profit or loss, and by how much?

NO. Alphonse did not make any profit because she sold both at the same rate. Therefore 25% of 300 will be 75 in both cases(it will be the same). Therefore she sold one at a 25% loss to Bettany(Rs.75) and other to Gemma at 25% profit( Rs.75). Therefore he gained rupees 75 with gemma but lost the same with bettany. Hence he only got back his cost price.HE DID NOT MAKE ANY PROFIT.
Sorry. Wrong answer. The loss percent and profit percent is calculated with respect to CP
Alphonse’s Cost Price for Bettany’s transaction will be 100*300/(100-25)=400 while for Gemma’s transaction it will be 100*300/(100+25)=240.
Therefore total CP=Rs.640 while total SP=Rs.600; therefore a loss of Rs. 40 is incurred.
And for the record, that is a 6.25% Loss.
Sorry I had to repost that. Apparently it wasn’t sent the first time around.
